Our Story

Baker’s Jewelry has been part of Glasgow, Montana since 1948, when L.J. “Bake” Baker and his wife Jean opened a small jewelry store built from hard work, craftsmanship, and a fascination with Montana agates. Born and raised in northeastern Montana, Bake spent his early years sheepherding, working on the railroad, and collecting moss agates across the prairie. What began as a hobby cutting and polishing stones eventually grew into a business that would become a fixture in the community for generations.

With just $5,000, homemade equipment, and a determination to build something meaningful, Bake opened Baker’s Jewelry on Glasgow’s front street. At the time, there were already two established jewelry stores in town, but Bake brought something different. He formed genuine relationships with his customers and became known not only as a jeweler, but as a trusted friend, artist, and craftsman. Baker’s Jewelry quickly gained recognition for its Montana agates and fine jewelry, even earning national attention in the early 1950s for its collection of Montana picture agates.

In 1979, a 19 year old from Lustre named Harvey Wall walked into Baker’s Jewelry looking for an opportunity. Like Bake, Harvey had grown up fascinated by Montana agates and lapidary work. After initially being turned away, Harvey returned and offered to work for free if Bake would teach him the jewelry business. Bake agreed, beginning a mentorship that would shape the future of Baker’s Jewelry for decades to come.

In 1983, Harvey purchased the business from L.J. and Jean Baker, keeping the Baker’s Jewelry name and the values it had been built on. A few years later, Karen joined the business, and together they continued growing Baker’s Jewelry into a trusted full-service jewelry store known for quality craftsmanship, custom design, and personal relationships with customers across Montana and beyond.

In 2006, after nearly six decades in downtown Glasgow, Baker’s Jewelry moved to its current Highway 2 location, allowing room for expanded displays, new technology, and continued growth while maintaining the welcoming atmosphere the store had always been known for.

The next chapter of Baker’s Jewelry began in 2014, when Brandt Burns joined the store as seasonal help during the holidays. Brandt later married Harvey and Karen’s daughter, Kyla, in 2016, truly becoming part of the family business. Over time, Brandt apprenticed under Harvey much like Harvey had apprenticed under Bake decades earlier, continuing the tradition of craftsmanship and mentorship that has long defined the business. Today, Brandt performs the majority of the jewelry repairs at Baker’s Jewelry and has become a talented jewelry artist in his own right, continuing the tradition of craftsmanship that has defined the business for generations.

In 2023, the showroom was completely remodeled and redesigned by Harvey and Karen’s son Jory Wall and daughter-in-law Hannah, blending a modern, welcoming atmosphere with the history and character of the family business. In December 2025, Harvey and Karen’s daughter, Kyla, returned to Baker’s Jewelry full time after years spent helping in the store throughout her childhood and early adulthood.

Today, Baker’s Jewelry continues to be family owned and operated by Harvey and Karen Wall alongside the next generation, Brandt and Kyla, as well as Mariah, who joined the team in 2024. While the store has evolved over the decades, the heart of the business remains the same: quality craftsmanship, trusted relationships, and treating customers like family. From Montana agates to engagement rings, custom jewelry, repairs, and generations of milestone moments, Baker’s Jewelry continues to serve northeastern Montana with the same care and authenticity it was founded on more than 75 years ago.
